“Ecuador ranks 146 of 180 countries included in the 2009 Corruption Perception Index by the International Transparency Organization. According to the entity, the results indicate that corruption is seriously widespread in Latin America. In addition, the agency said these countries have ‘high levels of poverty and urgently require strong and transparent institutions that can facilitate their more than necessary economic development.’”
