Ecuador’s foreign minister dismissed as “nonsense” Thursday a call for international arbitration after a court upheld prison sentences and a $40 million fine against a local newspaper for libelling the country’s president.
The ruling against El Universo, which is based in Guayaquil, drew wide condemnation among press groups and human rights organizations as a blow to free expression in Ecuador whose President Rafael Correa brought the libel suit.
