The President of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), Jaime Vargas, called for sanctions against corrupt judges involved in the case of the Piatua hydroelectric project, according to local press reports on Friday.
According to the CONAIE leader, the construction of hydroelectric dams in areas of the Piatúa River threatens some of the nation’s most important rivers.
‘Piatua cannot be negotiated with dollars or whiskey. We condemn these corrupt judges,’ he confirmed at a press conference, after a demonstration before the Judiciary Council.
