More from the country where the Chevron Ecuador trial has taken place…coverage of the ruling against a newspaper’s owners and editor who were fined and sentenced to prison time for libel against the country’s president:
Both Correa critics and El Universo lawyers allege he has influenced the judicial system through his position as president and with the presence of some of his cabinet ministers during court hearings on the El Universo case. Critics also note that the first sentence against the newsmen came far faster than such cases normally last, and that the court has adjusted its scheduled hearings to fit the president’s schedule. Correa denies directly or indirectly pressuring the court, and a judge who has heard the case also denied last week any undue influence from the president.
