Chevron Corp. (CVX) is using the discovery power of U.S. courts in an attempt to limit the enforcement of a potentially adverse ruling in a multi-billion dollar environmental lawsuit in Ecuador.

Over the past several months, some federal and district judges in the U.S. have granted requests by Chevron to take depositions and obtain documents for use in the case pending in Ecuador’s Lago Agrio court, where Ecuadorean farmers and indigenous residents accused Texaco, which Chevron bought in 2001, of poisoning the rainforest. The company denies any responsibility for environmental damage in the region.
