On September 17, 2013, President Rafael Correa traveled to the Aguarico 4 well, from where he organized a national network to officially launch the ‘dirty hand’ campaign against Chevron. He called on “the citizens of the world not to buy Chevron’s products.” And he repeated the falsehoods of the plaintiff lawyers.
The deceptive campaign began with a big lie. The open pool in the Aguarico 4 well was to be remedied by Petroecuador and not by Texaco Petroleum (Texpet), according to the Environmental Remediation Plan signed with the Ecuadorian State in 1995. This is also included in the Project for the Elimination of Contaminated Pools and Spills in the Amazon District (PEPDA) of 2006 and 2007.
This was the beginning of a fraudulent campaign that spread to several countries and included the film ‘El Juego Sucio’, released by the Attorney General’s Office under the command of Diego García, the arrival of paid actors, books, T-shirts, advertising and even people hired to protest against Chevron in the United States.
